- PaulHoule 6y agoOne of those technology El Dorados like the Fast Breeder Reactor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_large_floating_structure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_large_floating_structure my favorite occurence in fiction so far is https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Aether_Paradise https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Aether_Paradise VLFS is well developed when it comes to this sort of thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_Horse_PDQ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_Horse_PDQ and in principle the cost could be brought down a lot, but the people who make them now have a perfectly good business that they don't need to "disrupt". These are distinct from ships (potentially cheaper) in that they aren't easy to "move away" and I think the idea that you can "make them in a port a world and tow them to where needed" looks cheap compared to old alternatives but will keep them expensive compared to land. They might be solutions for places where it is impossible to build an airport; the Gazans could certainly use another strip, the question would be paying for it.
