Will American Ideas Tear France Apart? Some of Its Leaders Think So
- PaulHoule 6y agoSome Americans think France has done this to the US but they have been taken in by obscurantist academics who read Finnegan's Wake on the way to an 'English' Literature PhD -- they want you to think reading fiction is something hard like quantum mechanics, best left to professionals.
- coldtea 6y agoFrom fast food to culture and politics, stupid American ideas have been tearing up Europe for over half a century... It's difficult to resist immitating and parroting the top global dog, with a huge budget, and the dream-factories (Hollywood, TV series) and discussion-control-factories (internet, tech, social media) at its disposal for pushing its norms. Some things, like having popular national cinema was easier up until the 70s, when movies where more humane even in Hollywood. Heck, an Italian western could be as good or better than a US made one, even in production value. But after Spielberg, Lucas and co made it all about special effects, huge budgets and linear simplistic plots, it became impossible for domestic cinema to compete (at the dopamine-hit level) with US cinema, especially for impressionable young audiences (who then were brought up with that alone).
