Hmm, I wouldn't actually think of Scala to write this demo in (except for its advantageous standard library). Strongly typed languages tend to have some additional boilerplate code that can make them less effective for "code golf"-like contests. Someone else posted Haskell code (which is what I would have gone for), but I think that all this really shows is that the tasks tended to be optimized for code which lends itself to easy typed high-order functions.
