I post on several forums regularly, some of which i've been a member of since the early 2000's.
The only 'mainstream' social media account i've had is a facebook account. I use it pretty much like an address book. I barely socialize on it.
Forums are great. They're usually devoted to a specific niche or topic, they typically allow one to remain pseudononymous, you're usually not required to provide your entire life and what you end up sharing is usually just things devoted to the particular forum topic. You end up finding a small group of people you get along with and befriend. Much closer to real life friends than facebook friends.
Forums just feel more 'natural' to the way real life human interaction works than the big social networks do.
