  Yes, as we age and especially as we eat the wrong things such as too much sugar, carbs, processed foods the sugar damages the vascular system I am greatly over simplifying this after we develop insulin resistance and we start absorbing calcium in the wrong places. That body uses calcium, zinc, white blood cells and a few other things to essentially bandage the micro lesions in the artery walls. This causes several problems, including increasing risk of a cardiovascular event, reducing access to pathways required for nutrient uptake, arterial stiffness. I am also greatly oversimplifying this. You can find a myriad of studies on this topic on nih.gov.
