I completely agree with you, but everyone who doesn't have to deal with unicode/strings on a regular basis should consider themselves lucky. Once your add RTL text (with the matching bidi algorithm) or grapheme-based written system such as Devanagari which doesn't really have characters at all it becomes such a mess so fast.
