Elon Musk asked Biden administration to implement a carbon tax
- stevenalowe 6y agogee i wonder what company that would help...
- nosmokewhereiam 6y agoEven if to just slow down fast approaching competition...
- verdverm 6y agoMost likely many more than the one you are alluding to. A carbon tax is a far better policy than banning ICE vehical by 20xx, keeps the govt out of the market, mostly. Read the article and you realise the Biden admin is not likely interested... That's the more interesting part
- jfengel 6y agoThey're interested, but it couldn't be done. Any new tax would be a hammer for his political opponents. Not only does that scare his allies out of it, but even without that, there are some sincerely against it. So it couldn't possibly pass without basically forcing unanimity within his party. There was a similar situation with the Affordable Care Act, a law which on its face is more popular (in that people actually favor its provisions, with a lot of benefits and relatively little tax consequences). Despite that his party got absolutely massacred in the next election -- in part because they spent so much capital getting it passed that they were unable to run on it despite its popularity. This is something with far fewer immediately visible benefits, only costs. It's also something enormous numbers of economists say is by far the best solution, but voters don't particularly want to hear that when they can see that the price of gas went up. So not only wouldn't it work, but even trying would make it effectively impossible to do anything else.
