Forums Instead of Social Networks
- agomez314 6y agoI think the future of social interactions online is in forums rather than social networks, since these exert a top-down hierarchy rather than a decentralized (more natural) approach to networking.
- riidom 6y agoDiscourse combines the "feel" of older forums with modern features and visuals in a great way. Example: https://blenderartists.org https://blenderartists.org You linked to alternative.to in a pretty broad way, so maybe we can discuss other good, modern forum software. Idk, does lemmy.ml qualify? It is more reddit-like.
- agomez314 6y agoFunny, I had checked that out pretty recently too. Another I thought was really interesting was indiehackers.com. There's just something about a well-made forum that can capture the sense of clique community that allows it to grow unlike the smorgasbord of information that say, FB or Twitter provide.
- grawprog 6y agoI post on several forums regularly, some of which i've been a member of since the early 2000's. The only 'mainstream' social media account i've had is a facebook account. I use it pretty much like an address book. I barely socialize on it. Forums are great. They're usually devoted to a specific niche or topic, they typically allow one to remain pseudononymous, you're usually not required to provide your entire life and what you end up sharing is usually just things devoted to the particular forum topic. You end up finding a small group of people you get along with and befriend. Much closer to real life friends than facebook friends. Forums just feel more 'natural' to the way real life human interaction works than the big social networks do.
