‘Windows Is Shit:’ Linux Users and the Technical Superiority Problem
- panny 6y ago>Seeing users even mention that they use a Snap in many groups results in an instinctive “ew” comment from some dipwad who has nothing better to do than try and break people down for using something they don’t like. Why would you care or take offense to this? It's like someone saying "ew, pickles!" I still like pickles. It doesn't hurt my feels if they don't. Why are people like this author so fragile? Besides, calling linux users rabid zealots is overlooking the cult-like legion of Mac fanboys. Try it sometime. Criticize Apple in the slightest and see how fast you are verbally assaulted. (I think the new M1 stuff is amazing hardware BTW. I can't even bring myself to purchase a new Dell XPS 13 because the intel cpu is so obviously inferior to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlmkoOwBC4U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlmkoOwBC4U if you don't believe me.)
- merb 6y agounfortunatly apple's corporate support (genius) is garbage compared to dell's corporate pro support. and the xps can be bought with linux (with support). also dell does not use the latest cpu in the xps 13 lineup. you really can't compare the two. especially not when it comes to application that run on them.
- AtlasBarfed 6y agoI am shocked this headline doesn't have (2005) or a similar year after it. All ecosystems have dumb fanboy cults, but this has basically been settled business for a while... In business, linux won the cloud. Mac won the trendy developer laptop. Windows exists due to inertia in non-technical consumer PCs, which have been shrinking in importance for a decade now. It's been like this for close to a decade now.
- lazylizard 6y agogimme a reason to help? i dont sell linux or windows. i just dont enjoy using windows. try not bothering me if u do use windows though?
- dTal 6y agoThis became my default position after years of misguided Linux activism, which was partly philosophical zealotry and partly a desire to avoid becoming tech support for yet another one of those horrid Windows machines with their choked system trays and their dubious antivirus packages. Eventually I just started telling people "You can have free unlimited tech support from me if you let me put Linux on it. If you insist on Windows, that's your choice, and I wish you all the best, and don't come crying to me when it breaks, which it will". Made my life much less stressful.
- aigoochamna 6y agoHmmm but Windows is shit.
- pidtuner 6y agoLinux is cool until you need to set an icon for a desktop shortcut. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3452746/how-can-i-specify-an-icon-with-a-relative-path-for-a-linux-desktop-entry-file/346456 https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3452746/how-can-i-specif...
- riekus 6y agoJust came off a linux bender of 8 months, Had everything running in Ubuntu, but now I am back on windows, it is definitely saving me time setting things up. Everything just works without fiddling. Tried popOS couple of weeks. Same story.
- simonblack 6y agoI know how you feel. Whenever I get a new computer, I play for a while with the Windows it came with. But after a few hours or days, I thankfully shrink the Windows down to about a 30 gig partition (if not blow it away altogether), and install Linux. It's like putting an old, comfy coat back on after trying on a new coat. We don't need OS wars, just like we don't need browser wars.
- mbushey 6y ago> Telling someone they shouldn’t use proprietary crap when they need it is not going to change anything. It just exposes to the world what a dick you are. Nope, not dick, just someone with decades of wisdom. If you tell someone not to put Gorilla Glue in their hair does that make you a dick?
- chromacat248 6y agoHow is putting gorilla glue in your hair equivalent to using proprietary software?
- simonblack 6y agoI used to be a Linux advocate once upon a time. Then I had an Epiphany moment. Not all of us drive a Mercedes. Just because I do, does not mean the Mary has to, or Joe has to, or even Sven has to. They might be perfectly happy driving their Mazda, or their Ford or their Volvo. Since then, I no longer advocate Linux for everybody. Just because I use Linux, and used UNIX since 1990 before Linux came along, Mary and Joe and Sven can use whatever they like to use whether that's MacOS or Windows or even (gasp) Linux.
