China bans BBC World News from broadcasting
- jaza 6y agoSeems inevitable that, following this move, the BBC journalists currently in China will be expelled. And AFAIK they're among the few remaining mainstream Western journalists still there, seeing as all Australian journalists and many US journalists (among others) were already kicked out last year. Won't be long before there are no foreign reporters (not from free democracies, at least) on the ground there. So the only primary source of news about China, will be the glorious propaganda of Chinese state media.
- yorwba 6y agoYou're forgetting about the majority of Chinese journalists who do not work for state media. Or from non-English speaking Western countries. Or from non-Western "free democracies". Or from non-free non-democratic countries who're doing good journalism anyway. Most foreign outlets have only a handful of people in the biggest cities and are basing their reporting on other parts of the country on local reporting and social media, so not having any local staff might not even affect the quality of their reporting much.
