So in essence researchers invented a computer program that sifts through conjectures (possible theories) about a certain area of mathematics (continued fractions), which will help discover new ways of computing important constants like Pi or the Catalan's constant in this case. This is a great development, because these computing these constants quickly plays an important role in speeding up several different types of computer programs.
It's also the first step in a new field of computer software that would augment mathematician's abilities and save them time, which will allow humanity to study physics, biology, and other complex fields more effectively and rapidly create advanced technologies.

Automated theorem generation has been published at least as far back as 1975, and it's been a field of interest since before the creation of the first computer.
