1. If you really think 1/6 was something to be personally worried or afraid about, you need to stop consuming so much media. It's hysteria, fearmongering, and a blatant attempt to divide the American people even more. Worse, it's an attempt to establish an informant culture where neighbours and even family members sell people out to the FBI in exchange for upvotes on the Internet. It wasn't a coup attempt and you're extremely mislead if you seriously think so. If it had been, if there had been a real intent on a coup, there would have been tens of thousands dead.
2. Comparisons of Trump to Hitler are asinine, tone-deaf, and make it impossible to take your opinion seriously. Comparisons of 2020s America to the Weimar Republic, on the other hand, are not. The reaction against excesses are real, but there is not a single person present on the Right who presents as having the potential to be a uniting leader; Trump simply marketed himself into a hungry niche, and then proved to everyone he was not at all what he said he was. Anyone who even remotely checks to see what the far right is up to would know that vast swathes of them dropped support for him by 2017 when he proved he wasn't going to fulfill any of his promises at all, and that it was all just demagoguery. Smarter folks on both sides knew this from the start.
3. The article author is somehow completely blind the real threat, which is best described as Totalitarian Liberalism. Like many others, the author is fine with clamping down on some of the most quintessential freedoms people in the West have - freedom of speech, of association, and of the press - in order to gain some superficial sense of security from the brewing reaction. This is foolish, and will backfire in a huge way, as people are increasingly tired of the patronizing and insulting paternalism of the Left. Push harder, clamp down more, and the reaction will be correspondingly bigger after whatever delay these laws buy.
- kmos17 6y agoFunny how one can describe something and be blind to its most blatant example we had just in front of us for the last 4 years. 1/6 was the beer hall putsh, a dress reversal for a coup that only failed because of how incompetent its main instigator is. The same man who spent the last four years directly attacking the free press and anyone daring to stand in opposition to him. The main reason it happened though is exactly what you demonstrated in your comment, namely how effective the propaganda has been in gaslighting and deflecting. I would have loved to read your comment if we had had an assault on the capitol from liberals because they lost the election.
- core-questions 6y ago> 1/6 was the beer hall putsh This is ridiculous, this is unbelievable. There wasn't even a leader on 1/6 - there was Trump telling everyone "go march, I'll be there with you" and then he didn't even go. If there had been a leader, if there had been some person that the crowd knew and was rallying behind, it might have been a different story, but there was nothing of the sort. No speech, no actual politics, just pent up rage. > The same man who spent the last four years directly attacking the free press The press is not free, the press is captive, it's run by billionaires who want to keep their position entrenched no matter who is in power or what is in vogue. \ That same man abdicated, too, so what are you afraid of? Yes, he was stunningly incompetent. You should be glad of it. > I would have loved to read your comment if we had had an assault on the capitol from liberals because they lost the election. We just sat though four years of lies about Russian collusion, piss dossiers, allegations of election tampering, and BLM. It's basically the same thing. The problem is that you don't understand that the people who were protesting on 1/6 are actually much closer to being your allies than you realize, because you have been blinded by partisan politics. As a Canadian, this is all much easier to see from north of the border. Democrats huff Democrat propaganda, Republicans huff Republican propaganda, and then working class people on both sides somehow arrive at the conclusion that their peers are their enemy. Your country is broken and NPCs parroting rhetoric like yours is a key component of why this is so.
