TL;DR: Hydroxychloroquine worked in the lab with cells that have ACE2 but lacked TMPRSS2. Human trials failed because SARS-CoV-2 can enter the cell via a 2nd pathway assisted by TMPRSS2. Hydroxychloroquine probably works in combination with Camostat.
