> All three are employees of the Internet Society, a nonprofit that builds community broadband networks and teaches digital literacy around the world. Their aim was to bring the internet to the local school’s dozen students — who had been cut off from education during the coronavirus pandemic — using a tissue-box-sized digital library called Ilimbox.
I still don't get philanthrocapitalism, I mean, why don't we acknowledge that when the propertied classes artificially constrict access to knowledge, that it deprives others of being able to build and maintain their own infrastructure and tech. This whole capitalist 'charity' thing, and the propertied classes calling global south countries 'developing countries', is quite insulting. Especially when we consider that it's propertied classes who 'kick away the ladder' they themselves used to get up. Technology needs to be liberated from capital asap. The idea of never-ending growth and the privatization of knowledge through the use of the 'intellectual property' system is literally devouring earth.
Literally what the propertied classes are doing is kicking away ladder, pretending they didn't, and then filming themselves rescuing the very people they harmed in the first place.

- captainredbeard 6y agoHow do you explain the reduction in poverty over the past one hundred years? It would seem to conflict with your proposed theory.
- beckman466 6y ago"Prior to colonisation, most people lived in subsistence economies where they enjoyed access to abundant commons – land, water, forests, livestock and robust systems of sharing and reciprocity. They had little if any money, but then they didn’t need it in order to live well – so it makes little sense to claim that they were poor. This way of life was violently destroyed by colonisers who forced people off the land and into European-owned mines, factories and plantations, where they were paid paltry wages for work they never wanted to do in the first place." [...] "[O]ur global economic system [...] is failing the vast majority of humanity. Our world is richer than ever before, but virtually all of it is being captured by a small elite. Only 5% of all new income from global growth trickles down to the poorest 60% – and yet they are the people who produce most of the food and goods that the world consumes, toiling away in those factories, plantations and mines to which they were condemned 200 years ago. It is madness." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/29/bill-gates-davos-global-poverty-infographic-neoliberal https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/29/bill-g...
