The fact that you seem to be saying this unironically really demonstrates the utter insanity of Bitcoin if you ask me.
There is no value without social consensus. Even with Bitcoin. It tries its best to create an illusion that it’s otherwise, but it’s becoming clear that it’s failing.
I mean, it’s fundamentally worse with Bitcoin and other PoW cryptocurrencies (maybe PoS too, I haven’t thought much about that) than with other currencies.
Most other currencies are closely tied to the value of real physical value. Most of it is created as debt with some kind of property or resource as collateral.
With Bitcoin, you’re actively extracting value from the currency. You’ve got early miners caching out huge sums, mining is constantly funneling money out to ASICs, electricity and salaries. Most of the market cap of Bitcoin is extracted value, not stored value. It seems even Tether which was supposed to do the opposite might have been a scam to pump Bitcoin and extract value as well.
Bitcoin is a destructor of value, not a store of value. People are paying to have their money burned up in mining facilities by wasting electricity, with a few lucky individuals caching out of its Ponzi-like scheme. It’s collective insanity.
- randomhodler84 6y agoLet’s talk about the collective insanity of economic value based on debt. Figuratively a system where you steal from the future, and cannot ever really escape — the debt is just passed on to the next. By design you cannot get off this merry go round without inflating your currency, so debts can be paid with interest. In fact, debt as a value extraction is IMHo more unethical than any perceived “energy usage” arguments against PoW. Bitcoin is opting out of this debt system. Hard digital money, like the world has never seen before. Fixed emission, regardless of energy usage or transaction usage. I prefer this kind of crazy.
