Google Search Hiding News Results for Timnit Gebru
- jimrandomh 6y agoCropped off the bottom of the screenshot: a "Top Stories" box, present for the Timnit Gebru search but not for the other searches. This tweet seems to be trying to push a narrative that Google is trying to suppress news related to Timnit Gebru's firing. This doesn't seem to be true at all.
- philshem 6y agoScrolling through the threads, it seems to be regional and device based. This one tweet is from the person who noticed: https://twitter.com/databoydg/status/1359328883724615681 https://twitter.com/databoydg/status/1359328883724615681
- polka_haunts_us 6y agoAbsolutely garbage interpretation in that headline. Yes, the news tab gets shifted over to to a dropdown menu, I can confirm this (Seattle Area for what it's worth). I can also confirm that the first 2 things I see after searching "Timnit Gebru": A big block of their personal Twitter feed and then "Top Stories" the first two of which are "The Firing Of AI Ethics Researcher Timnit Gebru Sparks More Resigning At Google", and "Two Google engineers resign over firing of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru", followed by a "View All" button that links straight to google news. If they're hiding something, they're doing an incredibly poor job of it.
