Those companies want ML/DL ... today. You don't know what they will want by the time you finish your PhD. Do what interests you especially with a PhD. There will be times in your coming studies where you will question why you should even continue. Loving your topic will help you get through those times. If your goal is only to get a job with those companies guess what? They also like people with experience and you don't get that from a PhD.
