I've seen plenty of old websites crumbling when HN linked to them. You're getting tricked by bias. If (made up numbers) 1% of links crash under HN load, and 1% of links are to websites from before 2005, then 1% of 1% will be 15+ year old websites crashing. And given that I've said I've seen several i think the real number is a lot higher.
