I imagine a great deal of Reddit's value comes from the fact that its front page is essentially a mass viral advertising engine under the guise of original content.
I remember reading only a handful of moderators control all of reddit's most popular subreddits, the ones frequently hitting the front page. These I'm sure are just sock accounts for marketing firms to use when they mass promote content. I wonder how much of the front page is even "real" content these days, not just an advertisement.
The smaller niche communities are what make Reddit great for me. I guess a rigged front page is the price we pay to have so many quality smaller subreddits.

- devlopr 6y agoThe person could have lost a password. Been at a different machine. Works for reddit. First time poster / long time reader. Some people have been on this site so long they just like to play a game where they try to get to 500 karma as fast as possible. Then they start over and try to beat previous best time.
- pragma84 6y agoI don’t normally post on HN or even read it that often. So it is necessary because I lurk and just wanted to share my thoughts. I don't wanna derail things but perhaps consider most of the people on HN are probably lurkers and sometimes we make an account to join the chat :)
