Ask HN: How to you get a fulfilling social life as a solodev?
I’m 33 and for the last 10 years, I worked in tech, trying different kind of jobs (consulting, enterprise, startup, solodev, freelancer, etc.) and learned a lot along the way about my tastes.
To sum up: I love programming in solo, but hate doing this in team. I don’t want to manage people or worst, being managed by someone. However, I noticed I get truly miserable spending my whole life alone behind my computer monitor. I love meeting people, chatting and having fun with them.
And having the opportunity to compare different jobs, I noticed most of new people I met in my life came from my daily job. So, solodev careers sound bad for meeting new people, right?
Today, I need to make choices. I could be a solodev again, but very afraid to feel lonely and miss human opportunities, because life is not writing code, even if I love it.
I'm looking for ideas. Maybe mixing solodev with freelancing? Mixing solodev with various external social activities (sport groups, meetups, etc.) ? Maybe developing apps whose purpose is to meet people, to use the app in addition of using it?
Any idea, tip, thought, would be appreciated.
