Will the Clubhouse model work in China?
- dirtyid 6y agoVoice chat has been huge in China before Clubhouse due to population with limited technical and writing skills. Half of my grandmothers weibo groups filled with grannies are almost completely run on voice chat. The model is a natural fit with mature counterparts that this article already talks about. I surmise this piece exists because there are some very candid talks in Clubhouse right now about XinJiang among Chinese diaspora, between Uyghurs and Han. Some livetweeting about the discussions: https://twitter.com/KaiserKuo/status/1358112725038202880 https://twitter.com/KaiserKuo/status/1358112725038202880 https://twitter.com/BadChinaTake/status/1358186255981416450 https://twitter.com/BadChinaTake/status/1358186255981416450 Chinese censorship is going to neuter Clubhouse the same way it neuters other voice Chinese platforms that have more mature models than Clubhouse. Useful reminder: Clubhouse runs on Chinese founded Agora. Good chance these Clubhouse groups with real name and identifiable voice will be compromised. Agora being Chinese or not, there's already "infiltrators" in the groups recording / transcribing everything being said. This is no different than Chinese students taddling on each other in western university campuses for wrongthink. Rising Chinese nationalism among young = confucius institute / united front tactics have been ingrained on an individual level now. Real question should be will Clubhouse model work on Chinese topics. Answer is... not without serious work hiding identity first. Clubhouse should consider build in voice scrambler + incognito accounts.
