"Sand rain" is a pretty usual phenomena in South Europe. With generally, 3-4 large noticeable occurrences every year in the Alps. This one was however exceptionally early in the year. As far as I remember, it is the first time I see it (that much) coming on the snow of the ski slopes in February.
