Your post is an example of attributing to technical people the bad habits of all people. Much like, "engineers are bad at business" -- people in general are bad at business. Every person out there has a brilliant idea that just needs to be implemented (by someone else), fitting nicely into the "why don't they just". Engineers are conspicuously good at something and then it's fun to make fun of them, but I don't think their behavior in this regard is any different than anyone else, except that they may more frequently give thought to solving something.
