- ghaff 6y agoThe film's well worth watching. I got interested in that period of British history a few years back. It's sort of amazing how little we know about that era, compared to say Roman history, and how much is essentially based on a few manuscripts like Bede's and various pieces of rusted metal and coins.
- cybert00th 6y agoThe film was OK until Lily James' character, Peggy Piggott goes off on a tangent with Edith Pretty's cousin. Using love interest in order to pull the patrons in may be a time honoured method to improve a films bottom line, but it wears thinner and thinner with each passing year. And increasingly just evokes irritation and a sudden lunge for the remote!
- ghaff 6y agoWhile liking the film a lot overall, it was pretty much an out of left field irrelevant side plot. I suppose it would have been more conventional to have romance between the leads but that's harder to do when you're dealing with historical characters.
- ericmcer 6y agoIt would have been ok if they used it to fill up a <90min movie, but it was almost 2 hours long, just trim it out entirely and the movie is way neater. The friction between the professional and the self-taught archeologist, Mrs. Pretty’s illness and the slow revelation of what they had found was enough drama to fill a movie. The shoehorned ww2 and random love side plot stuff made me lose interest.
- ghaff 6y agoI was thinking in the context of Greyhound, one of the nice things about streaming is that you don't need to worry nearly so much if people will think they got their money's worth. People go to a theatre, see a 90 minute film, and some will leave thinking "Jeez, $10 for an hour-and-a-half film. Yeah it was good but..." On streaming, it really doesn't matter. See also The Queen's Gambit miniseries (although there are of course largely historical examples of TV in this format).
