2021 and the Linux Kernel's Floppy Driver Is Still Seeing the Occasional Patch
- fortran77 6y agoI still have some old music equipment (keyboards with sequencers, drum machines) that use floppies. I suspect this is one significant area of use, and industrial machines are another.
- jeppesen-io 6y agoI want to know more! Do they run linux or do you read the data on other hardware?
- fortran77 6y agoThese machines don't run Linux, but it's handy to be able to make and read their floppies.
- jeppesen-io 6y agoThat relates to the retro compute scene. Hardware like yours used in a commercial setting, or do you just have some old hardware only used by hobbyist?
- jeppesen-io 6y ago> We'll see how much longer the Linux floppy driver sticks around as it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine a relevant scenario where not only traditional floppy disks are used (outside of industrial equipment) I know floppies are still used out there in the wild world, but I'd love to hear more about it. I just know about it from the classic/retro comupting niche
- phendrenad2 6y agoI don't think the floppy driver will be removed any time soon, at least to keep parity with Windows and Mac.
