Microsoft Slips It In
- BelenusMordred 6y agoSurprised this hasn't got more traction. It's incredibly egregious behaviour. I use Raspbian on all my pi's out of laziness because it's got batteries included and saves a bit of time over installing debian. Perhaps the vague title? The real article is "Raspberry Pi Users Mortified As Microsoft Repository That Phones Home Is Added To Pi OS"
- morninglight 6y agoIf you want Microsoft to have access to your PI, your wait is over. Now your Raspberry Pi phones home to Redmond - without your consent. It's the same broken security that people fear with Chinese network products. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has proven itself to be just another Microsoft Shill.
- GoOnThenDoTell 6y agoWho thought this was a good idea?
- gigel82 6y agoHow is this Microsoft's fault? The title (and article) makes it sound like someone at Microsoft hacked into the Raspbian source control and injected some malicious "phone home" functionality. Instead, a Raspberry foundation approved contributor (with no affiliation with MS as far as I can tell) added a package source to make VSCode installation easier on the OS. It's a weird approach honestly. Just include the package in your own repository instead, why update the source list... but even then, what is MS going to see? An IP address of someone that uses a Debian-based Linux distro... what's the value in logging and mining that?
- YuccaGloriosa 6y agoThere is just no need. The raspberry pi can do many things, all of which users just get on and do. Nobody needs any hand holding like this. It's just intrusive, and unnecessary.
