Apple CPU/hardware + Apple display technology + Apple software would easily justify the 3k price. And people would pay it. Not just because it's Apple, but because Apple has the means to vertically integrate the entire tech stack into a high end product that far surpasses what their competitors are capable of. Google Android software and Qualcomm hardware have been trying for a decade and still can't match Apple.
So yea, Apple is poised to dominate VR. The next big ticket, high margin device that every human being on the planet will want. Forget the Apple car. If they can achieve 8K VR, they are steps away from having a device that can put you in the same 'meeting room' with someone else (like your friends, family, co-workers, etc..) and have it be visually indistinguishable from the real thing.
- wyxuan 6y agoRumors indicate this to only being a transitionary product for AR. Sorta like a dev kit, but not named that way.
- trixie_ 6y agoThe future of AR is VR. With 8K screens you just redraw reality.
- ghaff 6y agoAR seems far more interesting long-term. Real-time information about what you're looking at. VR seems much more entertainment, architecture, etc. focused--games, exploration, etc. Which isn't small but not necessarily transformational.
- trixie_ 6y agoLike I said the future of AR is VR. People are already recreating their rooms and spaces in VR. Just extend that to wearing the device all the time. People dont want to see reality. They want to see their own version of it. Cloudy days become sunny days, etc.. etc..
- fastball 6y agoThe idea is you have cameras on the outside and just composite digital objects on top of the video feed. Partially transparent solutions have issues like never being able to make your digital object completely opaque. Probably our materials science will get there one day, but what's the point when HD cameras + screens let you do the same sooner rather than later.
- mhh__ 6y ago"just"
- ipsum2 6y agoSure, but the quality of those 8k screens are important. Reality has very high dynamic range, refresh rate, and bit depth :)
- Rapzid 6y agoRetinal projection is the future of VR IMHO.
- bostonsre 6y agoYea, this will probably push VR to critical mass to get widespread adoption. Their brand loyalty is crazy, they could sell 20m toasters a year if they wanted.

- jayd16 6y agoApple doesn't dominate games so its not so clear they would dominate VR. Apple will need to nail the killer app to jump start adoption and an app store. The majority of Apple's full stack integration stops right before the content.
- throwaway316943 6y agoIf you ask me, video games aren’t the future of VR. They’re fun but the most memorable experiences are social. VR FaceTime + shared experiences and spaces will take the cake.
- TheRealNGenius 6y agothat's just semantics. Who is to say that a social, shared experience/spaces can't be a game. or vice versa
- throwaway3699 6y agoIf an online multiplayer, 3D shared space with the ability to exchange information and have fun isn't a game, then what is?
- cma 6y agoDoes Apple manufacture any display panels?
- cma 6y agoIt appears they now are going to manufacture t heir own designs through TSMC.
