Or just keep being your average workaday software engineer! Remember, it’s okay to just work a job, your focus on life can be other things besides advancing your career. I’ve worked with one of these people (plus any number of other staff engineers), they’re great at what they do and have a ton of clout in our organization. But I don’t think I would trade places with them. I do just fine for myself being a regular old cog in the machine.
