The Racist Legacy of Computer-Generated Humans (2020)
- drKarl 6y agoI get it, the author wants to make a political statement and was trying to find a target to use to write an article. You can say that technology to realistically render hair and skin is currently limited as it can't accurately represent other ethnicities yet. Or you can maybe even say it's biased as people who created the technology made it represent people like themselves. But saying that technology is racist it's beyond ridiculous.
- mytailorisrich 6y agoThe author makes the point that most, if not all, models developed for modelling and rendering human beings are focussed on 'white people', then calls this racist. We need to push back on this incorrect and damageable use of the term 'racist', which is a very strong and charged word with a specific meaning. My take on this bias in computer models is much more mundane: historically this is an industry made of people of European origin ('white') making products for mostly people of European origin, very often inspired by stories of European origin. People tend to reproduce what they see in the mirror and among their peers, and use the stories from their own culture. This is a bias, of course, but it is not racist and there is nothing inherently wrong with it.
