So on the one hand I see you using extreme words like "deeply corrupted", "erasing historical figures", "destroying", "lunatics running the city into the ground".
Then on the other hand I see that your ire's target is something as trivial as a city deciding on a fresh start and changing the names of a bunch of schools after a few decades, or centuries. It's not like they're writing the great presidents out of the US History curriculum.
And this imbalance begs the question: Why on earth are you and the blog-posters you referenced so angry about this? Have you asked yourself if it's healthy to be this angry?
Regarding Lowell, I think it's a shameful that they're proposing to ditch merit-based admissions, but they have pretty good cover given the state law. Citing [from CA law](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=EDC§ionNum=35160.5 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySectio....):
> the governing board of each school district, as a condition for the receipt of school apportionments from the State School Fund, shall adopt rules and regulations establishing a policy of open enrollment within the district for residents of the district...it shall include a selection policy for a school that receives requests for admission in excess of the capacity of the school that ensures that selection of pupils to enroll in the school is made through a random, unbiased process that *prohibits an evaluation of whether a pupil should be enrolled based upon the pupil’s academic or athletic performance.*
The law then goes on to caveat
> However, school districts may employ existing entrance criteria for specialized schools or programs if the criteria are uniformly applied to all applicants. This subdivision shall not be construed to prohibit school districts from using academic performance to determine eligibility for, or placement in, programs for gifted and talented pupils established pursuant to former Chapter 8 (commencing with Section 52200) of Part 28 of Division 4, as that chapter read on January 1, 2014.
SFUSD's claim is that Lowell no longer has _existing criteria_ since they made changes for COVID. At face value it seems reasonable, but I will be lobbying for them to keep merit-based admissions and allow this alleged lawbreaking to be tested in court.
