San Francisco sues its own school district to reopen classes
- fdemo 6y agoAbraham Lincoln was shot in the head by democrats after going to war with the entire South/half the country and burning it to the ground. He also wrote this small little document called the Emancipation Proclamation - I don't expect any liberals to understand the significance. But sure, keep your fascist covid-1984 scare mongering tactics up - you people are worse than Hitler.
- ecf 6y agoAre you okay?
- kwertyoowiyop 6y agoFrom the guidelines: “Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. It tramples curiosity.”
- hodgesrm 6y agoThe Bay Area public school response to COVID has been deeply disappointing. The commitment to education and opportunities to the less-well-off was just lip service, it seems.
- woah 6y agoThe SF school board is like a junior varsity team for the board of supervisors. Many supervisors started there. The people on it are auditioning for higher office. The one thing they can never do is piss off the teachers union, since unions have so much political sway in California.
- d6d6eheheh 6y agoYou can't just expect educators to think the most important thing in life is an education. Hope they all get replaced with charter schools.
- redis_mlc 6y agoMarxists are against charter schools, so we'll see if those will continue to exist or not in cities like SF since private schools can substitute Marxist ideology. In some areas of North America, non-Muslim families are considering sending their kids to Islamic schools to get away from Marxist (CTR, trans-first, etc.) public school programs. Or Catholic, etc.
- m0llusk 6y agoAnd in exchange for these antics they make roughly $300k/yr and have great benefits.
- throwawaysea 6y agoSan Francisco’s political culture and governance is a joke, and it has deeply corrupted their schooling system, alongside union influence. It was bad enough that they recently tried erasing historical figures like Abraham Lincoln by renaming schools (https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/27/us/san-francisco-school-name-changes-trnd/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/27/us/san-francisco-school-name-...). Now they’re also out to destroy the only good school they have because its race-neutral admissions process is viewed as racist in the BLM era (https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2021/02/san_francisco_is_on_the_verge_of_destroying_the_citys_only_meritbased_public_school.html https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2021/02/san_francisco_i...). They have even renamed the arts department because acronyms are viewed as a symptom of white supremacy (https://reason.com/2021/02/02/san-francisco-schools-acronyms-white-supremacy/ https://reason.com/2021/02/02/san-francisco-schools-acronyms...). With lunatics and ideologies running the city into ground on all fronts, and these headlines indiscernible from headlines at The Onion, is anyone surprised that the city is suing itself?

- Erem 6y agoSo on the one hand I see you using extreme words like "deeply corrupted", "erasing historical figures", "destroying", "lunatics running the city into the ground". Then on the other hand I see that your ire's target is something as trivial as a city deciding on a fresh start and changing the names of a bunch of schools after a few decades, or centuries. It's not like they're writing the great presidents out of the US History curriculum. And this imbalance begs the question: Why on earth are you and the blog-posters you referenced so angry about this? Have you asked yourself if it's healthy to be this angry? Regarding Lowell, I think it's a shameful that they're proposing to ditch merit-based admissions, but they have pretty good cover given the state law. Citing [from CA law](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=EDC§ionNum=35160.5 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySectio....): > the governing board of each school district, as a condition for the receipt of school apportionments from the State School Fund, shall adopt rules and regulations establishing a policy of open enrollment within the district for residents of the district...it shall include a selection policy for a school that receives requests for admission in excess of the capacity of the school that ensures that selection of pupils to enroll in the school is made through a random, unbiased process that *prohibits an evaluation of whether a pupil should be enrolled based upon the pupil’s academic or athletic performance.* The law then goes on to caveat > However, school districts may employ existing entrance criteria for specialized schools or programs if the criteria are uniformly applied to all applicants. This subdivision shall not be construed to prohibit school districts from using academic performance to determine eligibility for, or placement in, programs for gifted and talented pupils established pursuant to former Chapter 8 (commencing with Section 52200) of Part 28 of Division 4, as that chapter read on January 1, 2014. SFUSD's claim is that Lowell no longer has _existing criteria_ since they made changes for COVID. At face value it seems reasonable, but I will be lobbying for them to keep merit-based admissions and allow this alleged lawbreaking to be tested in court.
- mchusma 6y agoI feel one huge takeaway from covid is that the centralization of education is a mistake. There are a huge range of decisions appropriate for different family groups, and they should be free to make more decisions.
