'See Something, Say Something Online Act' Punishes Big Tech for Not Snitching
- michaelmrose 6y agoManchin is 73. As with most people his age he is technologically illiterate. By the time he became aware that the internet was a thing he was 53 and should avoid embarrassing himself by presenting opinions on how to regulate it. This bill would be disastrous especially if logically combined with secret lists of suspicious people who may be denied some of the rights afforded to the rest of the citizenry with no recourse or even acknowledgement like freedom of movement. The only rational response from any internet service would be to automate reporting of ANYTHING that might remotely be considered suspicious. Since there is no penalty for over reporting and under reporting could lead to a corporate death penalty under a deluge of lawsuits. This means that in addition to creating an indelible record that could in the future harm your life and freedom it would result in a deluge of mostly useless data ensuring that even if someone is legitimately trying to prevent terrible harm it will almost certainly go unnoticed and uncorrected.
