Seems bad news for the Homebrew community as well. Isn't it plausible that some old, less popular but perfectly working formulae will stop working, at least for a while? I particularly hope that the migration won't mean that older binaries (e.g. Python 2) will disappear completely. Even if homebrew deliberately won't serve them today, they are a valuable archive. Is there a complete mirror available already?

Homebrew could, and IIRC still can, build everything from source.

  This is correct. Homebrew will gracefully fall back to a source build on your local machine if it can't (for whatever reason) access the bottle host.
