While I don't disagree with you on this, I do think they need to pick educational tools that allow open protocols.
For a couple of examples I deal with now:
- My School is all in on Google/Zoom. I cannot sign into my school account because I don't have Google Play Services on my phone (and the school disabled IMAP sign-in, so I cannot sign in it with K9 Mail). *Ironically, I can use it on my Pinephone pretty well.
- The school uses 2FA based on DUO, which does not use TOTP but their own app. I once again don't have Google Play, so I am out of luck. I also cannot use my Yubikey for desktop sign-in because I don't have chrome installed (Firefox: https://community.duo.com/t/u2f-keys-in-firefox/1987 https://community.duo.com/t/u2f-keys-in-firefox/1987). So I am forces to use text based sign-in.
So while the idea of close app themselves do not bother me, the fact that many of these apps force closed protocols infuriates me for reasons like the aboce.
