I'm only really familiar with Hololive, but their streamers exist in this very strange state of pseudo-acting. They have an avatar and a theme associated with that avatar, but there's absolutely no way they can be expected to stay true to a script when they're doing hour long streams (Korone has streamed for 26 hours straight before, only stopping for bathroom breaks). So a lot of their individual personalities shine through in what they say and do. The better the streamer can mix their own real-life personality with the character, the more engaging the streamer.
Probably the best examples of this are Kiryu Coco and Houshou Marine. Coco has had both real life and scripted controversies and it's sometimes hard to tell which is which. She is supposedly Japanese but speaks English with a southern accent. With Marine it has become a running joke that her character is supposed to be 17 when it is blatantly obvious that she is in her late twenties / early thirties. Additionally, she plays the role of a playful and devious pervert, but has so many very strange and sometimes raw stories about pornography and sexual experiences it's really hard for me to believe that it is all scripted; it seems more like someone got to know her really well and wrote a fantasy character around her real personality.
Overall I find the more genuine streamers (Like Amelia, who barely plays a character at all) much more entertaining, but there is a real sense of playful mystery when people's real lives get onscreen alongside their character.
- rozab 6y agoI've seen people online get very upset at folks just for mentioning other projects of their favourite vtuber. They didn't want to see them as a real person at all. I found it deeply unsettling.
- subjectsigma 6y agoI think there's multiple angles for this. When Haachama does her cooking videos, she's careful to not even show her hands, because even doing that could break the immersion for some people. Which I agree, is very unsettling to me. However I think the reason that most people don't like seeing other projects from the same vtuber is not because they don't want to see them as a person, but because the Japanese take internet anonymity really seriously. Harassment online in Japan, especially of idols, gets extreme to the point of being dangerous. It's very, very easy to find the faces of some Hololive members on old Niconico Channels, however current fans lose their shit when you mention this because they see it as an attempt at doxxing. It's from a place of love, I don't think it is an attempt to dehumanize.
