> The new code of conduct bans harassment on and off the site, barring behaviors like hate speech, the use of slurs, stereotypes or attacks based on personal characteristics, as well as threats of physical violence and ‘hounding,’ or following someone across different articles to critique their work.
> It also bans deliberately introducing false or biased information into content. Wikipedia is a relatively trusted site compared to major social media platforms which have struggled to curb misinformation.
I'm a little confused. Weren't hounding and introducing false information already against the rules? I'm pretty sure they are, and I'd also be sure most of the other stuff is too (except maybe the "off site" behavior stuff).
- joshuaissac 6y agoThere were rules against such things on the English Wikipedia (and other large Wikimedia projects), but not necessarily the smaller projects. The new rules apply across all Wikimedia projects.
- mormegil 6y agoThat's not right, the current (global) Terms of Use already prohibit (among other things) "With the intent to deceive, posting content that is false or inaccurate". (See https://foundation.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use/en https://foundation.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use/en section 4.) I guess the inclusion in the CoC just adds more options for enforcement.
- remram 6y agoIt sounds like a simple announcement that they are looking into enforcing the rules more seriously, and the first step was breaking off part of their existing terms into a separate "code of conduct" document?
