I've recently increased my usage of VLC when I discovered that there were no good podcast apps for macOS. Specifically, I listen to serial podcasts in batches, so there's a very clear to-listen list and the episodes can be quite old. For some reason, even the open source RSS readers refuse to accept that someone might want to keep a long backlog of articles (podcasts are RSS feed where the article has an MP3 file, in case you didn't know).
VLC natively can display the RSS feeds, but sadly doesn't have a notion of what is "already listened". So I save the episode list to a text file and have a script that pops a line off the top, saves the MP3, and I listen directly to the MP3 in VLC.
So, if you know how I can automatically save both the track position and track number in an m3u playlist, I'd love to hear the secret!
