TSMC's bet on global dominance pays off after decades of planning
- AtlasBarfed 6y agoHow much assistance/funding/etc does Taiwan's government provide TSMC at this point? Is it basically like Samsung where it is essentially an arm of the government? I googled some initial funding of course back in the day, but didn't get much info on current day. TSMC is viewed by some as being so critical to the modern economy and information technology that it basically ensures China won't invade Taiwan because of the extremely strong response that would provoke from all the other countries of the world. Given China's sustained assertion of its territorial rights and burgeoning power, that becomes more and more important. And with the huge cost of new-process Fabs in the 10s of billions, that also almost requires governmental coupling if you aren't in a sufficiently large economy.

I'm sure there's a short-term plan for it. China has the world's largest navy. You could count how many personnel carriers they have to see how close they are to an amphibious invasion. One of their strategies is to have sabotage and assassination teams in place in foreign countries to sow initial chaos so that any military response is delayed for several days, while they invade. Then the organ harvesting begins. > because of the extremely strong response that would provoke from all the other countries of the world. Did the CCP care about foreign response after squelching HK? No. Xi doesn't care about anything, really, except staying in power. Like Mao said, if half the Chinese population dies, just less mouths to feed. China is an outlaw nation at this point, a bully, a rabid dog. Oh my bad, "wolf warrior." Historically, the Taiwan Strait (81+ miles) and US ships have prevented invasion. China has ships now, but their new problem is soy-boy one-child soldiers and seamen. The CCP has also been doing a Stalin-esque purge of army officers, so that doesn't help.
