But this feels like trying to stir up politically trouble. For all practical purpose Taiwan is independent. But yeah 天下大势,合久比分,分久必合。there is no stopping the tide of history. Taiwan is part of the Sino-cultural sphere, more so than Korea and Japan since they even speak the Chinese language. It will be united into one whole China at some point.
- pestatije 6y agoYeah, chinese democracy... at some point.
- yorwba 6y agoThat's like arguing that Austria will be united into one whole Germany at some point. That idea has always been popular among ethno-nationalists, but after losing WWII, German ethno-nationalism has become politically irrelevant. Nowadays, the only way Germany and Austria might become parts of the same country is via the EU, which is very much the antithesis of ethno-nationalist ideas. Only a minority of the Taiwanese population are recent, Mandarin-speaking immigrants from the mainland, and since the end of the KMT dictatorship, the government has changed course towards supporting local languages, so even the "common language" argument is losing ground. Aside: Taiwanese Southern Min teaching materials by a kindergarden in Kaohsiung: http://webms.chkops.vi.kh.edu.tw/newholo/teach/teach_2.htm http://webms.chkops.vi.kh.edu.tw/newholo/teach/teach_2.htm So the most likely path for unification of Mainland China and Taiwan would be via an "East Asian Union" formed not due to common cultural ties, but to further economic integration among nearby countries with compatible political systems.
