I think its quite sad to see the obession with money having such a negative influence on the crypto space. It is a very interesting technology on it's own, but the money aspect gives it bread appeal.
Imagine the stupidity if other programming projects got a random monetary attachment to them. Django-coin. Python-coin. Rust-coin. Nginx-coin.
- colejohnson66 6y agoI think the idea is that a block reward (essentially money) is a necessary reward for people to keep it going. If there was no reward to helping the chain, much less people would participate.
- rakoo 6y agoBut the money is supposed to be a crutch to make the blockchain work, and the payload is not the money transfer. It's the data that uncooperative peers turn out to agree on and it can be absolutely anything.
- gizmo686 6y agoThe problem is that money is a vital piece of the technology. In traditional cryptogrqphy, an attacker needs exponentially more resources then the honest parties. With crypto, all an attacker needs is about as much resources as the honest actor. The theory being that anyone with those resources would gain even more by behaving honestly. Without the money portion of this, the security guarentees here are just not viable.
