In light of the (re)emergence of cancel culture of the past few years, and the recent escalation to deplatformings, it occurs that we may be witnessing the emergence of a modern 21st century form of 'excommunication'.
Similar to the power of the Catholic Church in pre-Reformation Europe, even heads of sovereign nation states are subject to the exclusionary power of the governing agencies and power potentates of digital societies.
This post is intended to prompt a discussion of this hypothesis.
- rvz 6y agoYes. Pretty much still relevant in the 21st century but with an orwellian twist. Similarly, Rowan Atkinson described [0] this behaviour as a 'digital equivalent of the medieval mob roaming the streets looking for someone to burn.' Once the target has been acquired, they have become 'excommunicated' from society; permanently. When you add Big Tech into the mix, cancel-culture and the de-platformings becomes a lot more dystopian since they have the power and control to do so at any time.
