OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T seeing work for mainline Linux kernel support
- masijo 6y agoLove my OnePlus 6, it hasn't aged one bit since I bought it. Glad to see development happening in an "old" but capable device.
- valenterry 6y agoBut the battery starts to become weaker - and I have some trouble with the charger (it's on the device, not the cable). Too bad it's always so hard to exchange battery in these devices.
- paulryanrogers 6y agoIndeed. This and dropping SDcards (so built in flash burn out sooner) contributes to electronic waste just as much as bloated websites and apps.
- arsome 6y agoIf you're a tinkerer, I'd seriously recommend using something like ACC (Advanced Charging Controller). It'll automatically cut your charge off at ~80% and slow the charging if it's heating up too much. Should greatly extend the service life of your battery. You can pretty much just install with Magisk and forget it. Perhaps it's too late for your current phone/battery but maybe on the next one. https://github.com/VR-25/acc https://github.com/VR-25/acc Pair with something like AccuBattery for visibility into battery capacity over time.
- CameronNemo 6y agoI've been looking for something like this for a long time. I wonder if it is usable on non-Android Linux kernels for hardware that uses USB charging.
- megous 6y agoOn normal Linux, if your device has a proper PMIC with a driver that allows this, you can just change the max charging voltage to something like 4.1V or less via sysfs (/sys/class/power_supply/*) on each boot. You can do the same for maximum charging current, to avoid so called "fast charging", and charge at 0.2C for example. And that's it.
- andor 6y agoA few years ago, Oneplus service replaced the battery in my phone for a very low fee. It was done quickly and totally worth it.
- jeswin 6y agoOfficial battery replacement costs the equivalent of $16 in India, as listed on their website.
- estaseuropano 6y agoI also have trouble with the charger, it usually takes a minute of the old in'out until the phone and charger connect.
- rapsey 6y agoMy OnePlus 3 is still alive and kicking as a perfectly capable testing device.
- manojlds 6y agoStill using the OP5. Battery and charge pin are my only issues as of now.
- hebrox 6y agoJust replaced my 3T last week. Such a great device, still fast and only a few minor scratches. Too bad there were no more security updates. And although this is “hacker” news, I didn’t feel confident running non-stock Android..
- RealStickman_ 6y agoBeen running LineageOS on my OP3 for years already. Never had any problems that weren't caused by myself.
- villgax 6y agoLots of financial apps & cos treat OS names different than stock OS blindly as tampered/rooted for no reason. Maybe not on your daily driver but secondary phones will only survive with Lineage or community efforts.
- RealStickman_ 6y ago> Lots of financial apps & cos treat OS names different than stock OS blindly as tampered/rooted for no reason. Yeah true. I just ignore the warnings usually.
- pantalaimon 6y agoYou can still get updates https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/oneplus3 https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/oneplus3
- garaetjjte 6y agoI'm an outlier still using OnePlus One? I don't get the point of replacing phone every year or two.
- sstephant 6y agoI was a happy owner of the 1+ 2, 1+ 4. I'm now using the 1+ 6 and I'm glad to hear there's an upcoming Linux support. The thing is, my first two phones were stolen, so sometimes you don't really have a choice.
- pantalaimon 6y agoI used mine until a year ago when I got a new phone through work. It still runs the latest Android thanks to LineageOS and still was fast enough for the web (thanks to AdAway).
- uranium 6y agoI'm about to replace my OnePlus 5T. Last year it started garbling the incoming audio from outgoing phone calls, about 50% of the time. This week it garbled an incoming phone call, so I really can't put off upgrading any longer. I don't make a lot of voice calls, and from home I can use my land line, but if I can't receive calls, it's not a phone. I've really liked the phone apart from that, but it's a pretty big "apart from that", so I'm iffy on going OnePlus again. Support talked me through making a bug report, and then...nothing. Anybody else have a similar experience?

- gnulinux 6y agoI'm still using OnePlus 6. It's ok, I wouldn't say I love it but I use my phone only for chatting and browsing reddit so it's not worth a change. Besides, before I bought OnePlus 6 in 2018 I had a Samsung and it was a total shitshow. So I guess overall I'm happy with it.
- estaseuropano 6y agoI still use my OP6 but I have to admit I regretted buying it from day 1, there are just too many small inconveniences/annoyances and thanks to the various OP data scandals the eternal feeling that China is watching. I've also never been happy with the camera and after about a year an update caused issues so that often the camera app freezes. With Linux it might live yet a few more years for me. But I'm not going to buy another OP or similar brand.
- FlorianRappl 6y agoThis is so great! Still using my one plus 6T and not up for a change yet. Battery life is still good and the performance is more then sufficient. Now, the afterlife seems to be predestined, too.
- estaseuropano 6y agoI'm not sure if that's just the spin of the article, but isn't it odd that the fate of the device just depends on a single volunteer spending his time on making it usable? It seems surreal how fragile the phone OS ecosystem is. It wouldn't even be a big burden for the producers to, say, dedicate 1-2 staff days/month to this effort. Instead we all buy devices that expect to be bricked after 3 years unless volunteers step up.
- Jonnax 6y agoSo this means that the phone will one day be able to run a stock linux kernel?
- joana035 6y agoYes, and probably already does.
- pantalaimon 6y agoAlready almost does https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/OnePlus_6_(oneplus-enchilada) https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/OnePlus_6_(oneplus-enchil...
- icy 6y agoAs an OP6T owner, this is really exciting news. Caleb also used to maintain a SailfishOS port for the 6T, but he's dropped it to focus on pmOS instead.
- villgax 6y agoWish it would get Android 11 damnit
- calebccff 6y agoHaven't had time to work on it, but it's totally possible to apply some Android patches to the Mainline kernel and boot AOSP, so, keep an eye out
- 1MachineElf 6y agoDoes LineageOS work well on these? I'm not sure I could leave Android for a different phone OS. Un-googled LineageOS seems like the best balance, but also it's difficult to find phones that have great support. For example, I have an LG V20 running it, and the experience has been kinda buggy. Ultimately, I wish I could use it on a Pine64 PinePhone, but that effort looks to have stalled last year.
- flal_ 6y agoLineageOS on a 5T here, everything works perfectly. The lineage + OnePlus community is very active
- boneitis 6y agoI just found this post and haven't read what anything is about. But, I use a OnePlus 6 with rooted Lineage and whatever default version of a micro or nano gapps they suggest. I'm not much of a consumer-style user, but the phone absolutely does everything I expect of it. I do no shortage of stuff in Termux. AdAway works great. And, having the 256gb option gives me a lot of breathing room.
- karlicoss 6y ago6T, LineageOS works without issues!
- bullen 6y agoDoes OpenGL ES 3 work under linux?
- calebccff 6y agoHey, developer here, yeah OpenGL ES 3 works, that is, super tux racer runs just fine. Unfortunately Phosh lacks support for hardware acceleration, but I'm working on bringing Manjaro ARM to the device with Lomiri which runs VERY well
- bullen 6y agoOk, interesting! How hard would it be to run this on Samsung S9? I see they still sell adapters with HDMI/USB and power but how do you install DeX?
- opencl 6y agoEven the non-ES OpenGL 3 works in the freedreno GPU driver. According to [1] it supports up to 3.3. There's also a Vulkan driver though I'm not sure how mature it is.
