I worked in field robotics and sometimes you would find yourself in a boat without internet fixing robotic software problems at sea.
I took 50GB of wiki resources mirrored in my pocket.
- MattGaiser 6y agoWhat did you include?
- tlarkworthy 6y agoThe Robot operating system wiki mirror[1] + python resources [2] [1] http://wiki.ros.org/Mirrors http://wiki.ros.org/Mirrors [2] https://docs.python.org/3/download.html https://docs.python.org/3/download.html
- antpls 6y agoWhat software did you use to browse/search in it?
- tlarkworthy 6y agoGrep
- dvdbloc 6y agoSounds like a future Starlink customer
- baxtr 6y agoI was thinking about a situation similar to that in web development. But if there’s no internet, a web application doesn’t make that much sense does it...
- sdenton4 6y agoI'm thinking back to a real dumb django 'web' frontend I built for a raspberry pi camera project once... The whole idea was to have a page I could load from a laptop attached to the pi via a ethernet cable for quick debugging and interaction. No external internet needed, and did the job decently.
- canofbars 6y agoOur office lost internet connection for a day. We just connected to our phones and continued on.
- ProZsolt 6y agoI regularly coded (pre COVID) on transatlantic flights.
- easton 6y agoDash is fantastic for this. You can download all of stackoverflow and docs for most languages and keep them on your system if you want to go offline. https://kapeli.com/dash https://kapeli.com/dash
- mellow-lake-day 6y agoToo bad that website doesn't specify how much space that all takes. Would be interesting to know.
- bryanrasmussen 6y agoDo you really need to know? I doubt it takes up more than 30 GB, you're not downloading all of StackOverflow, just the content.
- mellow-lake-day 6y agoYeah because the SSD on my laptop isn't that big. It's 240 GB. Most of which is already filled.
- Kwpolska 6y agoI checked, and it’s split per language/library/framework. The SO offline docset for Python is 2.2 GB, and the docset for JS is 3.02 GB right now.
- mellow-lake-day 6y agoAwesome thanks! That's not too bad!
- RMPR 6y agoWhile it's not for documentation per se, I think archivebox[0] can be very useful for that use case. Disclaimer: I never used it, just came across this a while ago and thought it was cool. 0: https://archivebox.io/ https://archivebox.io/
