Ubuntu 21.04 Will Use Wayland by Default
- 0_gravitas 6y agoOoo I am very interested and hope this works out; I've only really used XOrg but a new contender/approach will be fun to see (of course I know it already exists, but operating on the assumption that this would cause its ecosystem to mature even further/faster)
- anuragsoni 6y agoWhich DE do you use with Ubuntu? If Gnome then the wayland support is already pretty decent with 20.04 and 20.10. (Gnome versions 3.36 and 3.38). The wayland situation on KDE Plasma is also improving with each new release and some other distributions (Fedora) are planning on switching their plasma session to wayland by default as well.
- 0_gravitas 6y agoI actually prefer to use WMs when I can, I know there's Sway which is toted a bit as Wayland's i3, but I more prefer bspwm's setup and would like to see that, albeit, I haven't looked too deep into the market at all; my main concerns are all pretty much compatibility-related, but that might not even be justified.
- anuragsoni 6y agoThe original forum post [1] that this article mentions has more details, and some discussions that also include Ubuntu devs. [1] https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/trying-wayland-by-default-again/20575 https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/trying-wayland-by-default-aga...
- Epskampie 6y agoI’m still stuck with crappy nvidia without wayland support. Can anybody recommend a reasonably priced amd card that will drive my 4k screen nicely?
- FloatArtifact 6y agoUnfortunately Wayland does not function very well with accessibility software without elevated privileges. Areas include but not limited to : -simulated keyboard/mouse input (some progress) ability to inspect window attributes (e.g. window title, executable and handle) ability to manipulate windows (e.g. maximise, close, etc)
