Tesla’s new Model S will automatically shift between park, reverse, and drive
- radicaldreamer 6y agoSeems like something with very little margin for error and catastrophic if you screw up. I'm not sure why this was a major feature they needed to ship or what problem they're solving for...
- maxerickson 6y agoIt's a bunch of parts they don't have to manufacture and assemble. The stuff about reducing friction seems like a snow job to me. A typical leg of a drive involves 3 shifts and probably lasts more than 5 minutes. Not real arduous.
- bjeanes 6y agoYeah. And when you might actually _need_ to change, it could be while doing a 3-point turn in the middle of a busyish street. You really don't want to be lingering in the middle of the road trying to coerce the AI into believing you really do want to change directions...
- LinuxBender 6y agoThis may be a little off topic, but as cars evolve to truly self drive, what happens in a traffic stop? Will the police issue a moving violation to the driver even if the car messes up? If so, is there case law or precedent for how one fights the ticket? Will car manufacturers provide a service that proves the car was driving and why it performed what actions in a way that a traffic court will understand? Will the driver accept all liability for decisions made by the car? If the car causes enough moving violations for the drivers license to be suspended, will the driver be allowed to sit in the back seat as a passenger once cars reach the point where a driver is not legally required?
- yuppie_scum 6y agoModel 3 autopilot is exactly as autonomous as I really feel comfortable with - that is, it can handle stop and go traffic and highway lane keeping. I’ll gladly drive the local streets on manual. This new Model S is a bridge too far in a few different regards. I’d probably go with an EV BMW or Benz in this segment when they are available, if I had the money. Or the new Hummer.
- m463 6y agoI wonder if unintended acceleration lawsuits will go away - or become a really really big deal.
- sschueller 6y agoHow long until it runs over a kid in a driveway backing up? Additionaly I don't see how the car with that new steering wheel can get approval in Europe when you are not supposed to cross you hands when driving. There is a reason people aren't driving around K.I.T.T. steering wheels.
