Emerging Pandemic Risk: Rusty Pilots Making Flying Errors
- LinuxBender 6y agoEven before the pandemic, there were a lot of mishaps. You can find some of them on VasAviation youtube channel. Passengers are probably not aware of all the times their pilot calls Mayday or PanPan. LiveATC.net is also a good place to listen to air traffic comms. The blancolirio Youtube channel reviews some of the mishaps and crashes.
- jfim 6y agoI can understand pan pan, but do commercial airliners really call mayday that often? It seems that would be more of a GA thing.
- a3n 6y agoI'd turn that around. Airlines are very corporate, risk averse and liability aware. I would guess airline pilots are trained and reminded to declare emergencies in general and specific circumstances, or lose their job if not their aircraft. A GA pilot may not want to embarrass themselves in some circumstances. Is my guess. EDIT: I would further guess that there is some statistical regularity for airliner maydays, and pan pans.
- LinuxBender 6y agoThey do, though many of them will intentionally word it differently and try as hard as they can to not get flagged EM and have to explain it to their company. Sometimes ATC has to repeatedly ask them if they have an emergency or need assistance, meaning to roll the ground vehicles in place. I've repeatedly heard that the airline industry can be brutal to pilots. Even if they have 20k hours of perfect flight time with no incidents, one incident can ruin their career. No idea how true this is.
- cozzyd 6y agoI thought rust was supposed to prevent most classes of memory errors. They must have not passed the right options to their cargo.
- lsllc 6y agoOh man, that deserves an up-vote!
