I think it would be good to keep hiding comment scores for new topics and then after a few hours show them... I like sometimes revisiting old topics and in those cases, having the comment scores helps a lot for skimming and finding information. On the other hand, I agree with you that hiding them stops some arguments and makes for a better discussion. So, why not have the best of both world by only showing the scores once the topic is a bit older and the discussion has tapered off?
