  That's arguing in bad faith. Electronic Hells and Culture warships don't exist, either, but Banks can still be making social commentary via his work. His socialism with a touch of anarchism was hardly a secret.

    How is that in bad faith? I grew up in eastern europe and we got loads of such absurd "social commentary" that painted all bourgeoisie as bloodthirsty enslaving monsters. It actually had the opposite effect, contributed to uncritical adoration of the West. So if we are going to have useful social commentary, let's perhaps focus on the actual and well-known psychopatic streaks of the CEOs and how they fit into their environment, not make comics villains out of them.
