The most mind-boggling thing about development IMO is the fact that it works at all, let alone so reliably.
It's a really complex system navigating all these different regimes of stability and instability, with variations caused by internal/external forces, yet coming out almost exactly the same every time.

- gbh444g 6y agoThe process looks similar to a CNC machine replicating a predefined shape. Except that here the material is able to grow itself. In this case it's not surprising that a CNC machine always creates about the same shape from a rather amorphous material.

It's just hard to think on evolutionary timescales, there's no difference for most of us between 1 million, 10 million or 1 billion years. Nevertheless, it took billions of years for life to evolve.
