It's been nearly 10 years since I last touched an autotools project. Recently I was re-exposed to autotools when trying to setup Underworld2[1] for what I thought would be a fun simulation project. Underworld2 requires PETSc, and OpenMPI. Finding the right environment variables so that ./configure would work with CUDA and each would reference the other was nightmarish. Who knows if it was autotools-related or something else that broke. The point is that even after 13 years of experience programming I am in no way equipped to deal with that stack to even find out.
